MORE EVIDENCE OF WHAT HAS GONE WRONG IN US POLITICS

Last night the Democrat contenders for their party's presidential nomination participated in the so-called "YouTube" debate. In the course of dealing with a question about his willingness to meet personally with foreign dictators of "rogue regimes". Senator Obama indicated a willingness to meet with the likes of Castro, Ahmadinejab, Chavez, Kim and Assad without any preconditions.
Subsequent reaction from Senator Clinton was, predictably, negative. She called his position "naive".
Senator Obama's response?

The Obama campaign, meanwhile, circulated a memo by Obama spokesman Bill
Burton saying Obama's response to the question had played well with focus groups
and that Clinton had changed her position on the subject — a claim her campaign
denied

So there you have it. It's not what is best for the country that matters; it's what plays well with focus groups.
Sometimes I worry that the U.S. is doomed.
